School-based Education Programme
The Community Training Unit was established in 2022 by the Fire Services Department to enhance the general public’s awareness of community emergency preparedness and equip them for critical incidents and emergencies. Through various community-based educational activities, the Unit aims to promote to the public“three basic skills of emergency preparedness”, namely, “extinguish and prevent fire; self-help and help others; escape and evacuate”.
Community Training—School-based Education Programme is the major initiative promoted by the Unit with students at kindergarten, primary, secondary levels across the territory as the target group. The purpose is to strengthen their grasp of the potential critical situations in the community and teach them methods and skills to deal with such situations by means of a series of courses and activities. Topics covered in the training include survival skills to employ in the event of fires and multiple dangerous situations, and even emergencies such as terrorist attacks; practical knowledge and skills of handling emergencies such as the administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED); the operation method of fire extinguishers and hose reels; and how to choose the right escape route during emergency.
The courses and activities are designed having regard to the learning ability of students at different levels. Free of charge, they can be arranged flexibly and are available for schools participating in this Programme to choose from according to their needs.
Note: The Fire Safety Education in Kindergartens Programme, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training Programme in Campus, and “Use the Ambulance Service Properly” Education Talk are included in this Programme.
