Fire services personnel commended for underwater search and rescue

A total of 34 Fire Services Department personnel have been commended with different levels of award for exemplary performance during the underwater search and rescue operation of the sunken vessel Neftegaz-67 off Tuen Mun from March 22 to 29.

Seven fire services personnel were awarded the Director's Commendation, eight were presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendation and 19 were given Favourable Entry awards at a presentation ceremony held this afternoon (June 20).

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Director of Fire Services, Mr Lo Chun-hung, praised the recipients for the professionalism they displayed in the eight-day operation.

"They demonstrated a very high standard of leadership, resourcefulness, devotion to duty and co-operation in team work," Mr Lo said.

The accident happened at around 9.30pm on March 22 when a supply boat, the Neftegaz-67, and a bulk carrier collided at sea east of the Brothers islands. The supply boat, which carried 25 crewmen, sank rapidly. While seven persons on board the supply boat were rescued, 18 crewmen were missing.

The department deployed 437 firemen, including 91 divers, 65 ambulance personnel, seven fireboats, three diving support vessels and four diving support speed boats to the scene. The divers conducted a total of 55 dives to search 14 cabins and two corridors of the sunken supply boat and the bodies of three missing crewmen were located inside the wreckage.

The recipients of the Director's Commendation are Chief Fire Officer Chow Wing-tak, Senior Divisional Officer Wong Chung-sing, Divisional Officer Kwan Kam-wing, Senior Station Officer Lam Wai-kit, Senior Fireman Chu Hak-kim, and Firemen Ling Chiu-tung and Ding Wai-man.

Recipients of the Chief Fire Officer's Commendation are Deputy Chief Fire Officer Chan Chor-sing, Senior Divisional Officer Robert Lau, Principal Fireman Lo Chow-kam, Acting Principal Firemen Chan Chi-ming and Chung Tak-wa, and Firemen Chan Woon-wei, Tang Tze-keung and To Chi-ming.

The 19 fire services personnel issued with Favourable Entry at the ceremony are Divisional Officer Lam Yik-kwan, Acting Divisional Officer Yu Kam-shan, Assistant Divisional Officers Ho Chi-lap, Ng Wai-shing and Cheung Chi-kwong, Senior Station Officers Ip Shu-kai, Lo Chin-pang and Yee Kwok-keung, Acting Station Officer Lau Kai-sun, Senior Fireman Chan Wa-hung, and Firemen Chan Kwong-hing, Ma Chung-ming, Wong Kwok-ying, Cheung Yat-wing, Yung Man-tai, Lo Kwok-kuen, Yuen Ka-keung, Lam Yim-lung and Fung Yu-ching.
